Cave diver Daniel Saska was kind enough to model for me a few weeks ago at Cenote Chan Hol. Most of the cave is filled with beautiful white speleothems, but some side passageways are decorated with golden/brown formations. The variety of tunnels and decorations within a single cave system is one of the reasons that cave diving in Mexico is so much fun.

Wendy Spidlova, our delightful cave and cavern gui

Wendy Spidlova, our delightful cave and cavern guide, swims through shimmering light beams and vast tunnels at one of my most nostalgic cenotes. I have been diving this cenote since 2009, and one of my first exploration sites was owned by the same landowner. It brings me great joy to share it with my shop's guides and divers.

Thibault Blanc, one of the cave instructors at our shop, navigates a beautiful tunnel in the Nai Tucha/Koox Baal cave system. The cave is diveable only by certified cave divers, and it's one of my favorite places to visit near Tulum, Mexico. It's extremely decorated and has a variety of fantastic dives to enjoy.

Cavern diving sounds like it should be dark and sp

Cavern diving sounds like it should be dark and spooky. It's not! One of the rules for safe cavern/cenote diving is to always stay within view of natural daylight. Sometimes, the daylight is dim, but the light beams often illuminate the entire cavern zone. On dives like this, I feel in awe of the beauty of our planet.

Chan Hol has become a classic cave dive near Tulum, Mexico. Divers park in the owner's immaculate garden and descend to find equally beautiful cave passages. Daniel Saska and I headed out to this gorgeous cenote last Sunday for a photo shoot to celebrate his successful completion of Full Cave with me.

Daniel Saska and I had a wonderful photo shoot at Chan Hol, celebrating his full cave certification. He was a fantastic first-time model, and we got many good images. My favorite from this shoot was unexpected. I had no great enthusiasm for shooting the pottery and bone collection of the ledge near the entrance; it's been photographed a million times and wasn't interesting to me until I pulled out the lights and realized what I could do with it. These artifacts were placed on the ledge to avoid damage from divers coming through the restricted entrance slope from the cenote.

One of my favorite tunnels near Cenote Nai Tucha has always been a bit of a swim. I finally had the chance to check out Cenote Xuxi/Sushi with our guide, @thiburon_bianco, over the holiday break, which allows access much closer to this tunnel. What a wonderful place for a photo shoot to officially welcome Thibault to our UTJ team as a full cave instructor. His bio is live on the website and linked in our IG stories.

Wendy took her full cave training with us a few years ago, returned last winter, and lurked around the shop until I offered her a job. Wendy officially joins our staff for 2025 as a cavern and cave diving guide, and she will be building up experience with our team to teach cave and technical diving in the future. This is my favorite room in Cenote Coop One. I think of it as the yellow and gray room because it is, well, yellow and gray. The stalactites are so long and thin and delicate that they are nearly transparent. The floor is covered with smooth gray flowstone. These photos are from last year with Jinuk Song, and he's coming back soon to do his stage cave certification with me. I can't wait!

Stalactites and other cave decorations make a dive in the Koox Baal cave system a true delight. This place feels like a cave diver's playground, and every corner, each new tunnel, reveals more formations. For this photoshoot with Marc and Martina Steurer, we entered from Cenote Nai Tucha and spent most of the dive shooting the mainline. I miss these guys and hope they make it back to Mexico soon.

Winter sunshine at Cenote Ponderosa (El Eden) near Puerto Aventuras, Mexico. At my dive center, we specialize in overhead (in the caves) and technical diving. This includes guided cavern diving, an easy way for certified open-water divers to enjoy the Mexican cenotes and see what cavern diving is all about. Ponderosa is one the closest dive sites to our shop, and the light beams streaming into the cavern zone from the jungle are spectacular.

Divers often ask me, "What is your favorite cave dive?"

Choosing a favorite dive is difficult because the caves in the Riviera Maya are so diverse. Often, I feel that I am comparing apples and oranges. How does one compare the halocline in Ponderosa to the delicate formations in Nai Tucha? They are two completely different things. However, if I had to choose a favorite, I would choose this line. I was so happy to visit here yesterday, but these photos are from a little while ago featuring the wonderful @sev.regehr and his super scoots.

Cenote Minotauro has always been one of my favorit

Cenote Minotauro has always been one of my favorite caves. I call it a "cave diver's playground" because it's twisty and turn-y, has multiple levels and has various fun (and sometimes challenging) restrictions. Back in 2007, it was the first cave I fell in love with, and I have fond memories of borrowing my diver center's truck to sneak in a quick afternoon dive with friends whenever I could. Here, model Bre Butler poses in some of the iconic locations in the cave.

Fondly remembering this photoshoot with Lilia Cabrera Gallaga (@mxscuba) last fall at Cenote Coop One. I'm disheartened that the Nai Tucha/Coop One entrance is currently closed to divers by the new management, but at least we cave divers know an alternate entrance. There are nearly infinite cave dives in the Riviera Maya if you know where to look, and we are always looking.

So far, 2024 has been a year of big adventures in

So far, 2024 has been a year of big adventures in cave diving - from dragging drysuits and backmount tanks through the desert, to surfacing in sumps in France, to watching a group of hardcore cavers drag my rebreather through the mud in Indonesia. Vince is currently diving in cold water caves in Switzerland, and I couldn't be happier with our adventures so far this year. I still think the drysuits in the desert incident wins the idiocy contest, though. Here are some photos from those dives, including an epic shot of Tyler Flynn, who somehow decided I wanted him to hover sideways. I don't know why.

Cave diver @_tonywon was kind enough to model for

Cave diver @_tonywon was kind enough to model for me at Cenote Fenomena. This flooded cave near Tulum, Mexico, is what I think of as "pretty pretty white cave." It's a shallow (7-10m average depth) white cave filled with the most delicate and intricate formations imaginable.
