The water temperature in the cenotes is around 77°-78° Fahrenheit or 25°-26° Celsius.
DOES THE WATER TEMPERATURE CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?
No. The surface temperature of the water (the first few feet) may be affected by the ambient temperature, but a few feet down the water temperature in the cenotes stays the same throughout the year. The temperature below the halocline (in the salt water) does seem to vary throughout the year, reaching up to 80° Fahrenheit or 27° Celsius in the summer.
YOU WILL GET COLDER THAN YOU THINK IN THE CENOTES.
Whether you are going on a guided cavern tour, cave diving, or taking a cave diving course, you will get colder than you expect in the cenotes. The combination of hot weather on the surface and the contrast of the cooler water, the darkness, and the fact that we do long dives with little exertion tend to chill divers.
WHAT THICKNESS WETSUIT SHOULD I USE IN THE CENOTES.
At Under the Jungle™ we recommend a minimum wetsuit thickness of 5 mm (and possibly a hood) for cavern tours, and a minimum wetsuit thickness of 7 mm for cave diving and training. The instructors at the shop all use drysuits, and this is no excessive. We spend a long time in the water, and you will too! If you do choose to bring a drysuit, keep in mind that the weather gets very hot in the summer months, so you will want a light undergarment to prevent overheating on the surface. We rent 5 mm wetsuits and hooded vests as the shop.
